Food in Italy is a lot different than it is in America. I have found that, after the first few days, food is the biggest adjustment. At home in Texas, I eat a wide variety of food types, such as BBQ, Italian food, Chinese food, Mexican food, and a lot of salads. I had heard that Italians’ main meals are pasta and pizza, but I assumed there would be other options.
Our first meal as a group was incredible. We had many appetizers, pasta, dessert, and the best wine I have ever had. I was in heaven; everything was much better than I had ever tasted before. The food here is lighter, obviously a lot healthier, and much more satisfying. Even the sodas taste better and less sugary. The next day I had the pizza. My mushroom pizza was thin, crunchy, and perfectly prepared. I have never had anything like it.
I love the food here, it is truly amazing; but it is not what I am used to eating daily. As someone with celiac disease, carbs are not something I usually consume often. I eat a lot of protein at home, and the beef and pork I am use to is not the same as it is here. I have found that this is the biggest struggle for me. Before, I often stated that I could survive on pizza, and here I am surviving on the best pizza in the world. Even though I have had it six times this week, I am still craving more pizza.
